If you are looking forward to have a career which includes helping the underprivileged people, you can think of doing social service in India. Also, if you wish to have a career that is not just confined to the four walls of an air conditioned office, you can surely consider social service or social work. Increasing cases of drug consumption, child and women abuse, mental depression, HIV positive cases, poverty, disability and old age difficulties have actually made need for the social service and Non Profit Organization jobs in the Indian continent.

Social service generally deals with the social, emotional as well as the financial problems rising out of various aspects of the lifestyle. Through social service, the volunteers can spread public awareness on some important issues that concern the Indian nation. The social work is not just limited to helping the poor or working for the women, it is diversified into different streams such as community organization, research work and social orientation, clinical social service, medical social service, industrial work, school social service and criminology to name a few.

Reaching the poor requires social service, coordination between the agencies, targeting the poor in a better way, involvement of poor and better policies. The social service in India has improved education and health to some extent but a lot has to be done in the future. The reasons because of which the social service programs have done little to help the poor are somewhat similar like non cooperation by the governmental bodies and not getting sufficient funds. Even access to health services and education has improved. However, inequalities still exist due to biasness from the authorities.

Some reputed organizations that have worked brilliantly in the realm of socio-economic uplift as well as welfare of destitute children, aged, socially weak, economically challenged, disabled and underprivileged are UNICEF, CINI, CRY, UNESCO, Department of Rural Development and Help Age India among various others.

The access of poor to social security and housing services has been restricted due to the fact that these services were not adequate as per the needs and requirements of the poor lot. The social work policies are not comprehensive and even the quality of service is very low. Issues that are common to social service sector include inflexible service system, weak management and ineffective targeting which ultimately result in mismatch between the services offered and the perceived requirements.

The programs like natural resource management, environmental education, scholarship for the poor and meritorious, supporting the child rights, tribal development and social education are some important aspects that are looked after by the NGOs and other volunteering organizations in India.

Social service in India also includes educating the slum children, free education to children, blood donation and so on. In India, a large number of volunteer social work organizations participate in order to help overcome the problem of poverty and unemployment in the country. All these services in turn help people to become good and responsible citizens and thus contribute in overall development of the country.
