Handheld police lights are used for so many purposes that calling them lights is gradually becoming inappropriate. Police lights nowadays double as weapons and also as recording devices like a camera, camcorder, or voice recorder.

The term police lights may refer to the lights flashing atop police vehicles, or to flashlights that are handheld by policemen. Referring to the former as police lights is fully justified because vehicle lights are purely a light source that can be used in different ways for different purposes like warning other vehicles or for directing traffic.

In the case of handheld police lights, the name may not always do justice to it because police flashlights have such a wide range of modifications in them so that it is sometimes a weapon, or a protective armor, or a camera, or a recording device, besides being a light source also. These lights can be switched modes with ease so that in an instant it will change from being a light to a weapon. In some instances it does both the jobs at the same time.

Handheld police lights have doubled as weapons all throughout its existence because the shaft of a flashlight was always made of hard metal. In olden days flashlights were larger and users also appreciated larger ones because a large light did a better job as a weapon. Further, larger ones provided better light as well, because it could hold more batteries.

Nowadays flashlights are much smaller in size but that has not rendered them ineffective as a weapon. Many handheld police lights come today with full weapon facilities in that there are gun mounted lights in which a gun is incorporated into the light in a fully concealed manner. When the gun needs to be used, the light facility helps in identifying the target rightly.

A non-lethal weapon like a pepper spray can also be incorporated into police lights, providing for self-defense as well as for controlling the enemy. The doubling of police lights as non-lethal weapons is taken much further in what is known as LED incapacitators. This weapon, which is designed like a flashlight, has the ability to emit an intense form of LED lights in an extremely rapid manner as to completely disorient and incapacitate the enemy.

Some police lights have hidden cameras in them so that an investigation scene or a crime suspect can be photographed with the flashlight. Or a flashlight may have in it audio or video recording facility. Some lights will also have the technology to transmit the recorded footage to a centralized location.

One advantage of making police lights double as so many other things is that carrying it as one unit becomes easy. Further, when weapons and cameras do not look as they are supposed to, and look only like a light, policemen can use it more easily, without giving the suspect a chance to realize that the policeman is about to fire, or that he is going to record something.

Some of these police lights aid in self-retrieval also by glowing in the dark, which means that it can look after itself without being lost. Many lights have become so complex that training is often given in using police lights the right way.
