Tactical boots are variously adapted for usage in mountain terrains, swampy jungles, deserts etc. While these terrains are natural barriers, there is another type of difficulty caused by the existence of things like mines, bombs, and chemical spills. Specially designed tactical boots are necessary for handling these manmade threats as well.

All tactical boots are lifesavers in one sense or another because all types of boots help the users by giving them a good grip on hostile terrains and thereby preventing accidents and injuries. Still, some tactical boots are more performance enhancers than anything as they are designed to help in faster and easier movement. But there are boots which do not help in faster locomotion at all – in fact some of them slow down the user – but these are mandatory wear under certain circumstances because it is worn to protect the wearer from fatal injuries. Blast resistant anti-mine boots are tactical boots designed to protect the user from anti-personal mines. The outsole of these boots may be vulcanized rubber or a combination of polyurethane and rubber, with polyurethane portion towards the inner side and rubber portion towards the outer side. Between the outsole and insole there will be a layer metallic honeycomb that can deflect the force of the blast and minimize injuries from fragments.

Polyurethane is used in blast resistant tactical boots because of its capacity to absorb shock. It increases the sole thickness as well, being thicker than rubber and this factor, together with the wedge shaped design also helps in deflecting the force of the blast sideways. Since polyurethane is lighter than rubber, it has the ability to make the sole thicker without increasing the weight.

Tabre is also a material that is used in tactical boots worn by people involved in demining jobs or those who have to walk through heavily mined areas. It is a granular form of stone, coated with resin, and is used in the sole of the boots. This too absorbs the impact of the shock and spreads it through the network of stones sideways, instead of letting it move upwards.

Blast resistant tactical boots may also have cleats underneath though this is more for preventing wear and tear than for blast protection. For additional blast protection there are blast protection over boots, which can be worn over the regular anti-mine boots or over an ordinary combat boot that may not have any special provision for blast protection.

EOD boots are also tactical boots designed to protect the wearer from close range explosion. The sole unit of EOD boots will consist of an inner sole and an outer sole, together with either a steel shank or a shank made of layers of a strong type of composite fiber. The upper of these tactical boots, made of laminated canvas, will be connected to the multi-layered sole. Besides that, there will be the shin guard made of tough composite fiber.

Tactical boots for chemical and biological protection are heavy duty boots made of chemical resistant and flame resistant polymers. These are necessary while clearing hazardous chemical or biological waste or spillage. Steel midsole, steel shank for arch support, cleats on the outsole, toe protection by steel toe or composite toe, and EVA midsole are among some of the features of such tactical boots.

Chemical tactical boots would appear oversized by general standards because many models are made with space within the shoes for accommodating the chemical suit. Besides that there are chemical over boots as well, which can be worn over an ordinary pair of shoes.
