How green are lights bars?

The growing use of LED for all emergency vehicle lighting requirements and the increasing availability of low profile lights bars, are benefiting the environment in a big way. The lesser heat generation and fuel consumption of LED lights and the limited wind resistance caused by low profile lights bars are saving fuel and reducing carbon emissions in the atmosphere.

Among the flashing lights that emergency vehicles sport, green is a comparatively rare color. It finds limited use in some countries in the vehicles of registered medical practitioners responding to an emergency, on the fire chief’s car, or on the vehicles of volunteer personnel helping during emergencies. The common colors used in lights bars, which are fast replacing beacons on top of most emergency vehicles, are red, blue, white, and amber. However, the steady modifications being wrought in lights bars are making them more and more green in the environmental sense.

The change has been brought about mainly by the advent of LED on the light scene. Earlier models of lights bars relied mainly on halogen technology or strobe lighting for light generation. And some of the lights bars could be so huge that they sat atop larger emergency vehicles across its entire width. With the arrival of LED, the size of all types of lights has shrunk. In fact LED bulbs are so tiny that its use was limited in the beginning to electronic equipment, instrument panel etc. where a single bulb could be used.

For use in flashlights and lights bars and decorative lighting, manufacturers cluster the tiny LED bulbs to the required size. The tiny clusters are then put inside lenses in a way that it is able to emit high intensity light in wide beams. Once the technique has been perfected, the size of the lights bars stopped becoming an issue. Now very low profile lights bars can be mounted atop vehicles in a way as to aid stealth operations, or smaller lights can be mounted inside the vehicle on the deck or dash or visor.

LED lights in general generate less heat than other types of lights and lights bars, which are smaller in size, would obviously generate much less heat. When the light is inside the vehicle, the low heat generation will keep the vehicle cool and will turn out to be an energy saver, as it will make lesser demands on AC. With the lights bars on top of the vehicle also, the environmental benefit it gives by lesser heat generation in the atmosphere will be substantial if we take into consideration the heat generated by thousands of emergency vehicles like ambulances, and police vehicles, and fire trucks plying the streets every day.

The smaller lights bars helps not just by less heat generation, but also by causing less wind resistance. When a giant size light bar sits atop the vehicle the wind resistance will obviously be high. Thin, low profile lights bars provide for low drag coefficient of the vehicle. This makes the fuel consumption of the vehicle low and thereby also reduces carbon emissions into the atmosphere.

Another greening aspect of LED lights bars is its low energy consumption. Energy consumption of LED light is roughly about one third of what is consumed by incandescent light. As a result, the burden on the engine for power generation is limited which again translates into money saving and lesser environmental pollution.
